History

Pendleton United Methodist Church was founded in 1834 as one of 19 churches on the Methodist Churches’ Pendleton Circuit.

Construction of the first sanctuary was set in motion in 1840 when the church bought an acre lot on the corner of Broad Street and Cherry Street for $75. The original wooden structure was remodeled several times before it was struck by lightening and burned in May of 1938. A new brick structure, including a 250-seat sanctuary, several Sunday school classrooms and a fellowship hall, was built seven months later.

In the fall of 1950, Pendleton Church withdrew from the Pendleton Charge and became a station church with its own pastor and a membership of 169.

As the membership continued to grow over the years, a number of expansion projects were undertaken. The education wing was enlarged in 1953, and a 1976 renovation provided a larger social hall, more Sunday school classrooms and a remodeled church office. In 1987, the old sanctuary was demolished and a larger structure was erected on the same site. The present sanctuary, which seats 350 people and includes two Sunday school classrooms, was consecrated in 1988.

Pendleton United Methodist Church launched the new millennium with an ambitious plan to grow facilities and discipleship. A new fellowship and education building, consecrated on December 2, 2001, more than doubled the church’s square footage and provides a social hall, parlor, kitchen and additional Sunday school classrooms to support programs and activities that demonstrate our commitment to God, His church and community.
